It originated as a medieval scribal abbreviation, combining a lowercase *n* with a superscript *o* (the ablative ending of *numerus*). Its primary use is before numerals in commercial, medical, and statistical writing—for example, № 5—to save space and clarify meaning. In typography and design, it is a distinct Unicode character (U+2116) requiring proper font support, and it appears in programming contexts as a data-labeling convention. While common in European and Russian documentation, it is largely replaced by "No." in modern English prose.
